Anthony Martin Gerdes grew up in Edna, a small Texas town of about 6,000 people located between Houston and Corpus Christi. His father owned a laundry and dry-cleaning shop, and Martin developed an early interest in photography, building a darkroom in his bedroom during eighth grade.
